Google Play now runs personal Android apps built in AI Studio, no developer account needed

From Oct 13, users aged 18+ in select markets including the U.S. can vibe code an Android app in Google AI Studio and run it on their own phone through Google Play with a regular Google account. Apps stay private; sharing comes later.

Since October 13, 2026, Google Play lets people run Android apps they built in Google AI Studio on their own phone using a regular Google account, with no developer account required. The feature is rolling out to select markets, including the U.S., for users 18 and over.

How it works

  • Describe the app in Google AI Studio and let AI build it ("vibe coding"). Since May 2026, AI Studio can generate a Kotlin and Jetpack Compose Android app from a single prompt, with an emulator right in the browser.
  • Launch it through Google Play as a personal app: it runs on your device, stays private and is kept separate from the public store catalog.
  • For deeper changes you can still download the project as a ZIP or export it to GitHub and open it in Android Studio.

What you can't do yet

  • No sharing yet. Google says that in the coming months you will be able to share personal apps with a close circle of friends and family.
  • Going public means graduating to a professional developer account. At that point the app goes through the same Trust & Safety reviews and quality standards as any other developer.

Availability outside the U.S.

Google's announcement only says "select markets, including the U.S." and does not list other countries. If the personal app option doesn't appear in AI Studio, your account is not part of this rollout yet. You can still install a build directly on your phone over USB from AI Studio for testing.
