Google rolls out Skills in Gemini, set to replace Gems

Starting September 30, 2026, Google is rolling out Skills in Gemini, letting users save and reuse custom instructions with a slash command; Skills will gradually replace Gems across the Gemini app and Google Workspace.

Google announced on September 30, 2026 that it is rolling out "skills" in Gemini, a feature letting users save frequently used instructions once and reuse them instead of retyping prompts each time. The feature is going live in Gemini chat globally starting today, with Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education customers set to receive it in the coming weeks.

How it works

After creating a skill, users can reuse it by typing a forward slash "/" followed by the skill's name directly in the prompt bar, skipping repetitive instruction-writing. Multiple skills can be combined, or reference files added, for more tailored results. Google suggests uses like presentation prep, content drafting, and brainstorming.

Skills are replacing Gems

Google says skills will gradually replace Gems, its previous tool for customizing instructions in Gemini. Existing Gems data will migrate automatically to skills over time, without requiring immediate action from users.

Who is affected

Individual Gemini app users can try skills starting today. Google Workspace users in business, nonprofit, and education tiers will get access later, within the coming weeks, according to Google.
