Copilot Chat is coming to shared and delegate mailboxes in classic Outlook
A new Microsoft 365 roadmap item brings Copilot Chat to shared and delegate mailboxes in classic Outlook. Users with full access or folder-level permissions will be able to use Copilot Chat directly inside those mailboxes.
Microsoft added a new item to the Microsoft 365 roadmap on October 13, 2026: Copilot Chat will become available directly inside shared and delegate mailboxes in classic Outlook for Windows. Until now, the feature had not been available in classic Outlook.
Who can use it
According to the roadmap description, it covers two groups of shared mailbox users and delegates:
- People with read and manage (full access) permission on the mailbox
- People with mail folder-level permission
These users will be able to open Copilot Chat while working in the shared or delegate mailbox, without switching back to their primary mailbox. Microsoft also notes the feature applies when the mailbox is added to Outlook in a specific way.
Why it matters
The change is relevant for small businesses on Microsoft 365 Business that run shared addresses such as support, accounting or contact inboxes, and for assistants who handle mail on behalf of a manager while still using classic Outlook.
What to do
The roadmap description does not give a specific release date. Admins should watch this item on the Microsoft 365 roadmap and in Message center, and review shared mailbox permissions so each person's access matches what they actually need.
