Cheap VPS: how to choose a provider for a small business

Helps small business owners compare cheap VPS options on practical criteria (virtualization, server location, backups, Windows) instead of looking only at the price.

A cheap VPS is only worth buying if the server is stable, in the right location and backed up. If you only run a simple website, shared hosting is usually easier; if you need root access, your own applications or Windows, a VPS fits better. This guide gives you comparison criteria and a way to test before paying long term.

Who a cheap VPS suits, and when hosting is the better choice

A VPS (virtual private server) is a slice of a physical server set aside for you, with its own operating system and usually the highest level of admin access (root or Administrator). In exchange, you are responsible for setup, patching and security. Many buyers of low-priced VPS plans overlook this: a low price often comes with an unmanaged plan.

Consider a VPS when you:

  • Need to run your own applications (internal software, an API, n8n, Docker, a database) that hosting does not allow.
  • Have a website whose traffic is growing and needs steadier resources than shared hosting.
  • Need a machine that runs around the clock for background jobs, storage or testing.
  • Have someone on the team who can administer Linux or Windows Server, or is willing to learn.

If you only have a WordPress blog or a company website and nobody handles IT, hosting with a friendly control panel is usually lower risk. You can look at iNET Cloud Hosting or AZDIGI Hosting to compare against a VPS before deciding.

Criteria for comparing a cheap VPS

The list price is just one column in the comparison. The table below lists what to ask a provider or check on the product page. For pricing, see each provider's current price page, because prices and prepayment terms change over time.

CriterionWhy it mattersWhat to check
VirtualizationDecides whether you get your own kernel, can run Docker and other operating systemsWhether it says KVM or container (OpenVZ, LXC)
Server locationAffects latency for your users and response timeDomestic or overseas; whether you can choose
Disk typeSSD or NVMe is noticeably faster than HDDDisk type, RAID or not
Backups, snapshotsSaves you after a bad update or accidental deletionAutomatic or manual, retention, any extra fee
BandwidthA fast network port does not mean unlimited trafficMonthly quota, throttling or extra charges when exceeded
Operating systemLinux is usually lighter and cheaper to runWhether Windows is offered and whether the licence is included
SupportDecides how fast you can resolve incidentsVietnamese-language support, channels, scope of technical help
Refund or trial policyLets you test before committing long termExact period and conditions on the provider's page

KVM versus container virtualization

For low-priced VPS plans, ask about virtualization first. KVM gives you your own kernel, so Docker and custom setups work. Container-based plans share the host's kernel, which makes them less flexible and, according to many discussions on international VPS forums, easier for providers to oversell. The same community also points out that KVM is not automatically immune to overselling, so measure it yourself.

Overselling and how to check it

Overselling means a provider allocates more total resources across many VPS than the physical server can deliver, betting that they rarely all peak at once. A moderate level is acceptable; the problem appears when many machines run hot together and yours slows down at peak hours. Some community members suggest watching CPU steal (the %st column in top) and measuring disk speed at different times over several days. This is community advice, not an official standard, but it is cheap to do before you pay long term.

Server location

If your customers are mostly in Vietnam, a domestic server usually gives lower latency and easier Vietnamese-language support. If you serve users abroad, or need a service that domestic providers lack, a server in Asia or elsewhere may fit better. Check real latency rather than trusting marketing pages.

On Hostinger: according to the provider's VPS page, every plan uses KVM virtualization, includes full root access, has data centres in North America, Europe, Asia and South America, offers Linux templates with software preinstalled, weekly backups and manual snapshots. The page does not mention Windows, so ask the provider if you need a Windows VPS. It also says its 24/7 customer support only answers non-technical questions about billing and plans, so be ready to handle the technical side yourself. If you want to look at a server located abroad, you can check Hostinger next to domestic providers. The link above is a partner link: Dùng Gì may earn a commission if you sign up or buy through it.

With domestic providers such as Vietnix, AZDIGI or iNET, the advantages are usually a nearby server and Vietnamese-language support. Read each provider's own page for plan specifications and policies before buying.

Windows VPS, game-hosting VPS and free VPS

These are three needs that often come up when searching for a cheap VPS, and each has its own caveat.

Windows VPS

Windows Server needs a licence and is usually heavier than Linux, so the same specification tends to cost more and need more RAM. When you ask a provider, clarify whether the Windows licence is included, the recommended minimum specification and how you connect (Remote Desktop). If you plan to run accounting software or your own tools, ask an IT professional or the software vendor about licensing terms before you deploy.

VPS for running games or apps around the clock

Many people rent a VPS to keep an application running continuously. Read the terms of both the VPS provider and the game or application, since some restrict automation or multiple accounts. That is outside the scope of this article and we do not assess it.

Free VPS: real, but with conditions

Free tiers from large providers exist, with clear limits:

  • Google Cloud: according to Google's documentation, the Always Free tier includes one e2-micro virtual machine per month in one of three US regions (Oregon, Iowa or South Carolina), plus standard disk storage and limited outbound traffic. The allowance is measured in hours, does not roll over to the next month, and you must have an active billing account.
  • Microsoft Azure: according to Microsoft's page, new customers get 750 hours a month on B1s, B2pts v2 and B2ats v2 burstable VM sizes (Linux or Windows) for 12 months, plus a one-time credit that must be used within 30 days. After that you must move to pay-as-you-go to continue.

These plans are small, hosted abroad and require an international payment card to sign up, so they suit learning and experiments better than running a business system. Terms can change, so check the official page before signing up.

5 steps to choose a cheap VPS safely

  1. Define your need: which application will run, Linux or Windows, how many users, how important the data is.
  2. Pick a server location based on where your customers and team are.
  3. Rule out plans that do not state the virtualization, disk type, bandwidth or backup policy.
  4. Buy the smallest plan or shortest term available, then monitor speed, stability and support for one to two weeks.
  5. Renew long term only once you are comfortable, and keep your own off-server backup of important data.

After renting, do not skip basic security: change the SSH port and limit password logins, enable a firewall and update regularly. On an unmanaged VPS, this responsibility is yours.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cheap VPS reliable?

It can be, if the provider clearly states virtualization, disk type, bandwidth and backup policy, and you have tested it yourself for a week or two. Low prices carry the risk of overselling or limited support, so do not pay long term on the first purchase.

How is a VPS different from hosting?

Hosting is a shared environment managed by the provider: easy to use but less customizable. A VPS gives you your own operating system and high-level access: more flexible, but you handle setup and security. Small websites without IT staff usually suit hosting better.

Is there a free VPS forever?

In limited form: Google Cloud has an Always Free e2-micro VM in certain US regions and requires a billing account. Azure is free for only 12 months for new customers. Specifications are small, so they mainly suit learning and testing.

Should I rent a Windows or Linux VPS?

Choose Windows when your software only runs on Windows or you need familiar Remote Desktop; choose Linux for websites, Docker and web applications because it is lighter. With Windows, ask clearly whether the licence is included.

Is a VPS in Vietnam or abroad better?

If your customers are mostly in Vietnam, a domestic server usually gives lower latency and convenient Vietnamese support. An overseas server fits when you serve users there or need a service only available abroad. Measure real latency before deciding.
