OpenAI introduces dots, an always-on AI agent that works for you

OpenAI has unveiled dots, a new product described as an always-on AI agent that runs its own cloud computer, connects to thousands of apps, and keeps working on tasks even when a user isn't actively directing it. Dots is powered by GPT-6 Astra and began rolling out on September 29, 2026.

How dots works

According to OpenAI, each dot has its own cloud computer and browser and can connect to more than 4,000 apps through the company's plugin ecosystem. Users can message their dot through ChatGPT, Slack, or Microsoft Teams, hop on a voice call with it, or let it quietly monitor things in the background and report back. OpenAI calls this background monitoring "proactive research," during which the dot is restricted to read-only access and cannot send messages or change app content on its own.

Who gets it and what it costs

Dots is rolling out to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets; Enterprise users (including Edu and Healthcare) can try a beta version once their workspace administrator enables it. The first dot is included at no extra cost with a Pro or Business Premium plan.

Controls and safety

OpenAI says users choose which apps their dot can access and can manage permissions through existing ChatGPT controls. Built-in rules determine when a dot can act on its own versus when it needs approval, and users can set Custom Rules to allow, require review for, or block specific actions. Certain sensitive tasks, such as changing a password, always remain with the user.

OpenAI also introduced "specialist dots," enterprise-focused versions with their own identity, credentials, and system access to handle defined responsibilities within an organization, currently rolling out through pilot programs and integrating with Microsoft Agent 365.
