Microsoft 365 Family OneDrive storage cut to 2TB
Microsoft is moving Microsoft 365 Family, Premium and Pro from per-person OneDrive quotas to a shared storage pool, starting with new subscriptions on October 8, 2026.
Microsoft is changing how cloud storage is allocated on Microsoft 365 Family, Premium and Pro plans, replacing individual per-person OneDrive quotas with a shared pool. Family and Premium drop to a 2TB shared pool and Pro gets 5TB shared, starting with new subscriptions on October 8, 2026.
Who is affected
Subscribers on Microsoft 365 Family, Premium and Pro plans, which can be shared with up to six people. Basic (100GB, one person) and Personal (1TB, one person) are unaffected since they were never shared plans, per Microsoft's support page.
What's changing
- Previously, each of up to six people on Family/Premium/Pro got their own 1TB of OneDrive storage, for up to 6TB combined.
- Now, Family and Premium share a single 2TB pool across up to six people, while Pro shares a 5TB pool.
- Storage add-ons purchased by any member, and free storage grants eligible members receive, are added to the shared pool.
- Files stay private: sharing a quota doesn't give other members access to each other's files unless explicitly shared.
Timing
According to Microsoft's support page, the shared-storage model applies to new or upgraded subscriptions starting October 8, 2026. Existing Family and Premium subscribers generally move to the new model after their first renewal on or after May 2, 2027, unless they change plans sooner. A separate Microsoft support page listing storage quotas states renewals starting April 1, 2027, which doesn't match the May 2, 2027 date on the main storage-changes page.
What users should do
Households currently using more than 2TB combined on a Family or Premium plan should check their usage before the switch, since they may need to delete data, move files elsewhere, or buy extra storage. Microsoft's support page does not indicate a price change for the subscription itself.
