Gemini free tier limits: Flash-Lite only starting Oct 9
From October 9, 2026, free Gemini personal accounts can only use the Flash-Lite model, losing Flash and Pro; AI Plus loses Pro on a rolling email-notified date, while AI Pro and AI Ultra are unaffected.
Starting October 9, 2026, Google is changing which Gemini models personal-account users can access in the Gemini app: free users will be limited to the Flash-Lite model only, losing access to Flash and Pro, according to Google's Gemini Apps Help Center.
Who is affected
The change applies to people using Gemini Apps (web and mobile) with a personal Google Account. Google's help page states the change takes effect for users without an AI subscription starting October 9; AI Plus subscribers will instead get an individual email telling them when the change applies to their account.
Model access by plan
Per Google's own table, once the change takes effect:
- Without a plan: only Flash-Lite remains; Flash and Pro are no longer available.
- AI Plus: keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, but loses Pro.
- AI Pro and AI Ultra: keep all three models — Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro — unchanged.
For each model that remains available, users can choose an effort level — low, medium or high — with higher levels giving more thorough answers while using up more of the usage limit. AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers also get access to the Deep Think mode.
Why this is happening
Google's page frames this as a continuation of the compute-based usage limits it introduced on May 17, 2026 for users 18 and older (and July 24, 2026 for under-18 users). Under this system, usage limits refresh every 5 hours until a weekly cap is reached; using the Pro model, media generation, Deep Research, or extended thinking uses up the limit faster.
What users should do
Anyone relying on the free tier for tasks that need Flash or Pro — long documents, coding, complex math — should finish that work before October 9. AI Plus subscribers should watch for Google's email specifying their account's change date.
