Excel previews feature letting one cell hold multiple values

Microsoft has introduced Lists, Arrays in Cells and Nested Arrays, breaking Excel's 40-year one-value-per-cell rule, now testing in the Beta Channel for Windows and Mac.

Microsoft has announced Lists, Arrays in Cells, and Nested Arrays for Excel, letting a single cell hold multiple distinct values instead of just one, breaking a rule that has stood for roughly 40 years. According to the September 24, 2026 announcement on the Microsoft Community Hub, the feature is rolling out as a preview to Excel for Windows and Mac in the Microsoft 365 Insider Beta Channel.

Who can use it and how

The capability is currently available only to Microsoft 365 Insiders on the Beta Channel for Windows and Mac, and must be turned on manually. Users can create a list inside a cell via Insert > List or by pressing Ctrl+J, then enter values separated by commas or semicolons depending on regional settings. Excel recognizes each item in the list as an individual entry for filtering and calculations, rather than treating the whole cell content as one block of text as before.

Alongside Lists, Excel now lets an array live inside a single cell: instead of a formula spilling results across multiple cells, users can keep the output contained in one cell by wrapping the formula in curly braces. Excel also supports nested arrays for storing more complex structured data within a single cell.

What to keep in mind

This is a preview feature, behavior may change before general availability, and Microsoft recommends against using it in important workbooks for now. Familiar tools such as pivot tables, charts, Power Query, find-and-replace, and data validation do not yet fully interact with cells containing lists or arrays.

For Excel users on the standard release (not enrolled in the Beta Channel), this feature is not yet available and there is no confirmed timeline for wider rollout.
