Office skills crash courses in Hanoi: how small businesses should choose

This guide helps business owners and accountants pick an office skills crash course that matches the company's software, staff schedules and certification goals.

An office skills crash course makes sense when staff need to be productive in Word, Excel and PowerPoint within a few weeks. To choose well, check four things: whether the content matches the software your company uses, the schedule, the type of certificate, and the trial or deferral policy. The sections below walk through each criterion.

What an office skills crash course is and when a business should use one

At training centres in Hanoi, "crash course" usually means a denser schedule over a shorter period, not less content. For example, one Hanoi centre states that each subject (Word, Excel or PowerPoint) takes about 10 sessions of roughly 2 hours; learners can attend 3 sessions a week, or 6 sessions a week (Monday to Saturday) if they are in a hurry. Another centre advertises crash courses and beginner courses that open weekly.

For small and medium businesses, a crash course fits these situations:

  • New hires must produce contracts, official letters and quotations within their first month.
  • Accounting or HR staff need to build payroll, timesheets and stock sheets in Excel but are not yet confident with lookup functions or Pivot Tables.
  • The company has just switched office suites and wants users up to speed quickly.
  • An employee needs a MOS certificate by a specific date.

A crash course is a poor fit for someone who has barely used a computer: in that case, start with a basic computing course (Windows, Internet, email), which many centres still run separately.

Define your needs before comparing courses

Before looking at centres, the person in charge should answer three questions. The answers will rule out most unsuitable options.

Which office suite does the company use

Most crash courses in Hanoi teach Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; some also offer Google Sheets or Google Apps Script. If the company uses Microsoft 365 Business, an Office course is the natural choice. If the team works mainly in the browser with Google Workspace, ask whether the centre teaches Google Sheets and Docs, because the workflow and some functions differ from desktop Excel.

Also ask which version the centre teaches. Some centre pages list content based on Word 2013/2016/2019, while the current MOS exams include a Microsoft 365 Apps/Office 2019 version. A different interface can confuse staff when they return to their work computers.

Which skills the role actually needs

  • Administration and clerical work: structured documents, tables of contents, headers and footers, Mail Merge, document protection, Track Changes and Comments.
  • Accounting and HR: conditional functions (SUMIF, COUNTIF, IF), lookup functions (VLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH), filtering and sorting, Pivot Tables, charts, payroll, timesheets, inventory.
  • Sales: PowerPoint for presentations, quotations in Word or Excel.

These topics appear in syllabi that centres publish. Ask for the detailed syllabus and mark the items your staff really need.

Which certificate you need

Many centres issue their own certificate of completion. That is different from the international MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification. If you only need staff to do the work, an in-house certificate is usually enough; if you need a credential for capability profiles or for the employee's long-term use, see the MOS section below.

Six criteria for comparing office skills crash courses

CriterionWhat to ask the centreWhy it matters
ContentDetailed session-by-session syllabus, exercises based on real tasks (contracts, payroll, inventory)A short course with misaligned content wastes sessions
Software and versionMicrosoft Office or Google, which versionAvoid learning one interface and working in another
ScheduleSessions per week, morning/afternoon/evening slots, intensive optionMust fit staff working hours
Class size and computersMaximum class size, computers provided or bring your own laptopHands-on courses need close guidance at each machine
CertificateCentre certificate, or MOS preparation and exam registrationDetermines how reusable the course is
PoliciesTrial session, refunds, deferral, refund deadlinesLowers risk if staff get unexpectedly busy

Some practical points drawn from centre pages and roundup articles:

  • Published class sizes vary widely: one centre says no more than 8 people per class, while a roundup describes another centre as having up to 15. Some offer one-to-one tutoring.
  • A blog roundup says learners at a few centres must bring their own computer. Ask in advance if the employee has no personal laptop.
  • Financial policies differ. For example, one centre states it offers a free trial session, a refund if the course is not suitable after the first session, and deferral within a set period for a fee. These terms have specific deadlines, so read them carefully before paying.
  • Fees: check each centre's own price page, since some charge per subject, per bundle or per month, and prices may change.

Note: most information about centres online comes from self-promotional pages or blog rankings. Descriptions such as "reputable" or "best" are the claims of those pages, not independent assessments.

When to choose a MOS preparation course

According to the official IIG Vietnam page, MOS is an office skills exam created by Microsoft and delivered by Certiport (USA), taken online and available in Vietnamese. Key points to consider:

  • Exams are per subject (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access), and each exam lasts 50 minutes.
  • The passing score is 700/1000 or higher.
  • There is a Specialist level (core skills) and an Expert level (advanced Word, Excel, Access); the 2019 and Microsoft 365 Apps versions add a combined title once you hold the required certificates.
  • The IIG page states the certificate is valid for 5 years from issue; you can retake a failed exam, but all attempts must use a single account.
  • Certificate codes can be verified on Certiport's website.

Choose MOS preparation when staff already use Office daily and need a verifiable credential. If their hands-on skills are still weak, some centres offer per-subject bundles that combine practical training with exam preparation, longer than an exam-prep-only course. The exam fee is separate from tuition: check IIG Vietnam's website or ask whether the centre handles exam registration.

Classroom, private tutoring or self-paced online

FormatFits whenWatch out for
Classroom at a centreStaff need in-person guidance and can travel during office hours or eveningsPick a branch near the office; ask about fixed slots
Private tutoringStaff schedules are irregular, or only a narrow topic like Pivot Tables is neededUsually more flexible; agree on goals for each session
In-company trainingSeveral employees need the same contentSome centres offer business training; request a syllabus tailored to your tasks
Self-paced online courseStaff are self-motivated and need to study at any timeAccording to one roundup, video courses lack direct interaction with an instructor

If the main need is Excel for work and the employee can learn from videos on their own, you can also compare against the Tuyệt đỉnh Excel course (Gitiho) — an Excel course from basic to advanced for working professionals. That page uses partner links: Dùng Gì may earn a commission if you sign up or buy through it. Compare its syllabus with the skills list you drew up above before deciding.

Steps to choose a course for your staff

  1. List the specific tasks the employee must be able to do after the course (for example, payroll with employee ID lookup, mail-merged invitations).
  2. Note whether the company uses Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or both, and which version is installed.
  3. Shortlist three or four centres with convenient branches or an online option, and request a detailed session-by-session syllabus.
  4. Compare each syllabus against the list from step 1 and drop centres missing key items.
  5. Ask about class size, computers, time slots and whether a 6-sessions-a-week intensive option is available if needed.
  6. Read the trial, refund and deferral policies carefully, including each policy's deadline.
  7. Decide whether MOS is needed; if so, ask which exam version the centre teaches and who handles registration.
  8. After the course, give the employee a real task to check their skills instead of relying on the certificate alone.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an office skills crash course take?

It depends on the centre and the number of subjects. One Hanoi centre states about 10 sessions per subject, each roughly 2 hours; 3 sessions a week takes longer than an intensive 6 sessions a week. Combining Word, Excel and PowerPoint increases the session count accordingly.

Can I take an office skills crash course in Hanoi in the evening?

Many centres run morning, afternoon and evening slots that suit working people. Ask directly about start dates and available slots, as schedules change with each intake.

Do I need the MOS certification?

Not if the goal is simply to do the job well. MOS is useful when you need a verifiable credential; according to IIG Vietnam, each exam lasts 50 minutes, the pass mark is 700/1000 and the certificate is valid for 5 years.

Our company uses Google Workspace — should staff take a Microsoft Office course?

Core spreadsheet and word-processing knowledge carries over, but the interface and some features differ. Prefer a course that covers Google Sheets, or ask whether the centre can add it.

How is a centre certificate different from MOS?

A centre certificate confirms the learner completed a course at that centre. A MOS certificate is issued by Microsoft after passing a standardised exam and has a code that can be verified on Certiport's website.
