Cloud VPS Windows: When to Choose It and How to Pick Specs

A guide to help you decide when to choose Cloud VPS Windows over Linux, tell VPS apart from Cloud Server, and pick the right CPU/RAM/SSD specs before buying.

Cloud VPS Windows is a virtual machine running on cloud infrastructure with Windows Server installed, giving you Administrator access via Remote Desktop. It fits when the software you use (ASP.NET, SQL Server, in-house accounting apps…) only runs on Windows. This guide compares it with Linux VPS and lists the criteria for picking specs.

What is Cloud VPS Windows and how does it differ from Linux VPS

A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a physical server virtualized into several independent virtual machines, each with its own CPU, RAM, disk and operating system. Cloud VPS is the common term for a VPS running on a provider's cloud infrastructure, letting you choose the OS when you create the instance.

According to a configuration guide published by TotHost, choosing Windows or Linux should depend on the programming language of your app: a site built in ASP needs a Windows server because Linux does not support ASP, while a PHP site usually runs faster and more stably on Linux. If an app needs both, Windows is the safer pick since it supports both ASP and PHP.

Another practical difference is minimum RAM: the same source notes Windows Server needs at least around 2GB of RAM to run smoothly (older versions on 1GB RAM tend to lag), while a Linux VPS can run fine on 1GB for small tasks. So at the same price point, a Windows VPS usually needs more RAM than a Linux VPS to perform well.

When to choose Cloud VPS Windows

Cloud VPS Windows fits when:

  1. Your accounting software, ERP, or in-house app only has a Windows build.
  2. Your website or API is built with ASP.NET and needs IIS or SQL Server.
  3. You're more comfortable with a graphical interface (Remote Desktop) than a terminal.

If your site runs WordPress, PHP, or other common open-source stacks, Linux VPS is usually the more economical choice and uses less RAM for the same load. When unsure, the safest approach is to check with the software vendor which OS they require before ordering a VPS.

VPS vs Cloud Server: what to check before you buy

Many people conflate "VPS" and "Cloud Server" because both are virtual machines. The difference lies in the underlying infrastructure:

  • Traditional VPS: a virtual machine created on a single physical server through virtualization; its disk usually sits locally on that server.
  • Cloud Server: compute, storage and network resources are pooled across a cluster of servers, with orchestration to handle failures.
CriteriaVPSCloud Server
CostUsually fixed, easy to predictUsually usage-based, can be higher for the same specs
ScalingLimited by the physical server's hardware, needs a plan upgradeMore flexible, resources can scale up or down quickly
Disruption riskDepends on a single physical serverCan be reduced with redundancy, if the platform is designed for it
Admin accessFull root/Administrator accessVaries by platform, some tasks go through a management console

One important note: the word "cloud" on a product label does not automatically mean it has high availability (HA), auto-scaling, or backups. Before buying, ask the provider five things: is the VM disk local or distributed storage; where and how is the VM restored if the physical host fails; does resizing CPU/RAM require a reboot; where are backups stored, for how long, and how do you restore them; and is the SLA measured at the infrastructure layer or the application layer.

Managed vs self-managed

A term you'll often see is "cloud server managed" — meaning the provider patches the OS, monitors the server, and handles basic incidents for you. Most budget Cloud VPS Windows plans are unmanaged: you install Windows Updates, configure the firewall, and watch disk usage yourself. If your business doesn't have a dedicated IT person, ask explicitly whether a plan is "managed" before choosing — the staff time needed to self-manage can sometimes cost more than the price difference.

Sizing criteria: CPU, RAM, SSD, bandwidth

Below are reference specs by use case, based on suggestions from TotHost for cloud servers in general (applies to both Windows and Linux VPS — Windows just needs extra RAM as noted above):

NeedvCPURAMDiskBandwidth
Small personal website/blog1 core1–2GB40GB1–2Mbps
Forum, portal2 cores4GB120GB3Mbps
Business website2–4 cores4–8GB150GB3–5Mbps
E-commerce, video8 cores8–16GB300GB10Mbps or more

SSD storage (the search term "cloud vps ssd" reflects this) is close to the default standard now because it gives better read/write speed than spinning HDDs; some providers go further with NVMe. A general rule is to keep disk usage under about 85%, leaving at least 15% free.

If your workload needs very high, sustained single-core performance (such as video encoding or heavy builds), some users consider a dedicated server with an AMD Ryzen CPU instead of a shared VPS, since resources aren't split with other tenants on the same physical machine.

Windows Server licensing: bring your own or bundled in the price

Windows Server requires a license, unlike many free Linux distributions. According to Microsoft's Windows Server on Azure page, if your business already holds a Windows Server license with Software Assurance or a Windows Server subscription, you can use Azure Hybrid Benefit to bring that license to a VM on Azure instead of paying the OS cost separately in the hourly rate. The same page notes Windows Server 2025 is now available on Azure.

That's how Azure specifically handles it; local VPS providers usually keep it simpler: the rental price already includes the Windows Server license, so you don't buy a separate license — but check the plan description or ask support to be sure, since not every provider offers Windows on every plan. Some well-known international platforms (such as DigitalOcean) don't offer a ready-made Windows Server image on every standard instance type — check the supported OS list before signing up to avoid wasted time.

Is there a free Cloud VPS Windows to try

Many people search "cloud vps free" or "digitalocean vps free" because they want to test before committing long-term. Some large international cloud platforms such as Azure offer a free account or trial program with time or credit limits (the Windows Server on Azure page has an option to start trying Windows Server in the cloud). That said, this is usually a limited trial, not a permanently free Windows server.

Most VPS services commonly used in Vietnam don't offer a free trial for paid VPS plans; check each provider's refund or early-cancellation policy before you order.

A few VPS/Cloud Server options to compare

If you need a self-managed VPS (with root access) rather than shared hosting, these two are worth comparing:

Hostinger VPSVietnix VPS giá rẻ
Admin accessRoot, choose server locationSelf-managed
Storage—SSD, RAID 10
Backup—Weekly
FitsHigh-traffic websites or custom apps needing self-managementSmall websites/apps needing a server located in Vietnam

Both are described as suited to people who can self-manage a server; neither product description specifies which plan comes with a Windows Server image, so before ordering, check the product page or ask support whether a Windows image is available. See the product pages for Hostinger VPS or Vietnix VPS giá rẻ.

If you only need a few WordPress sites and don't need root access, shared hosting plans like Hostinger Web Hosting, iNET Cloud Hosting or AZDIGI Hosting are usually simpler and cheaper — but they won't work if you need to install Windows Server or custom software.

Hostinger is also a name many people search alongside "datacenter hostinger" because its VPS service lets you choose the server location when setting up. This is one option to compare, not a claim that it's the best fit for every need. Learn more at Hostinger. Frequently asked questions

What is Cloud VPS Windows?

Cloud VPS Windows is a virtual machine running on cloud infrastructure with Windows Server pre-installed, giving you Administrator access to install software and manage the server via Remote Desktop, instead of sharing resources like on shared hosting.

Should I choose Cloud VPS Windows or Linux?

Choose Windows if your app needs ASP.NET, IIS, SQL Server, or other Windows-only software. Choose Linux if you run WordPress, PHP, or other common open-source stacks — it's usually lighter on resources and cheaper at the same specs.

How is VPS different from Cloud Server?

A VPS runs on a single virtualized physical server; a Cloud Server pools resources from a cluster of servers and has failover mechanisms when one machine fails. The word "cloud" doesn't automatically mean HA, auto-scaling, or backups are included — ask the provider directly.

Is there a free trial for Cloud VPS Windows?

Some large international cloud platforms offer a time- or credit-limited free account, but most VPS services commonly used in Vietnam don't offer a free trial for paid plans — check the refund policy before buying.

How much RAM does Windows Server need at minimum?

Common configuration guidance suggests Windows Server needs at least around 2GB of RAM to run smoothly; older versions on 1GB tend to be slow. For real workloads (web, small databases), 4GB RAM or more is a safer starting point.
