Google Meet turns on AI note-taking by default for Business Standard and Business Plus from September 29, 2026
From September 29, organisations on Google Workspace Business Standard or Business Plus get "Take notes for me" automatically in meetings of three or more people, unless an admin changes the setting.
Google said on the Google Workspace Updates blog (September 22, 2026) that the new settings for "Take notes for me" — the Gemini feature that takes notes in Google Meet meetings — start to take effect on September 29, 2026.
What changes
- Until now admins had two choices: turn automatic note-taking on or off for all meetings. A third option is being added: take notes automatically only in meetings with three or more people.
- On Business Standard and Business Plus, this new option is on by default. On Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus and the Google AI Pro for Education add-on, it is off by default.
- Users get a matching option in their own Meet settings ("For all meetings I host with 3+ guests"). The admin default applies to users from September 29; after that, each person can change it for themselves.
- The rollout is extended: it may take more than 15 days for the change to appear on every account.
What small businesses should do before September 29
- Admins should open the Admin console, review the organisation's "Take notes for me" setting and decide whether to keep the default. If nothing changes, a company on Business Standard/Plus will have automatic notes in meetings of three or more people.
- If you often meet customers or partners, consider whether automatic note-taking fits your existing confidentiality agreements, and tell participants in advance.
- Organisations that took part in the Gemini Alpha programme may already have this setting on — Google recommends checking its current state.
- Remind staff to review their personal Meet settings once the new option appears.
