Claude Can Now Live-Edit Google Docs, Sheets, Slides (Beta)

Anthropic's official support page confirms Claude can now open and edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides live in a pane beside the chat, on Claude web and Claude Desktop, as a beta feature.

Anthropic has updated its official help center to confirm that Claude can now open and edit Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides files directly in a pane that sits beside the chat conversation. The feature is in beta, available on Claude's web app and Claude Desktop, letting a user and Claude work on the same file at the same time.

How to turn it on and use it

  • Click the plus sign in the chat, hover over "Connectors," and toggle on the Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides connectors individually — these are separate from the existing Google Drive connector.
  • Paste a link to an existing Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides file into the chat, or ask Claude to create one by explicitly naming "Google" (for example, "make a Google Slides deck from these notes"); asking for a generic document without the word Google creates a local file instead.
  • The file opens in a pane next to the conversation. This pane works on Claude on the web in Chrome, and on Claude Desktop when the built-in browser is turned on (off by default on Enterprise plans).
  • On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable these connectors at the organization level before individual members can authenticate and use them.

Current beta limitations

  • Claude cannot add charts to Google Slides yet, and some Slides edits may not show up live in the pane.
  • Claude can only open and change files the user's Google account already has access to; existing Google Workspace sharing permissions are not expanded.
  • Images embedded in documents are not processed by Claude; only text content is extracted.

How data is handled

According to Anthropic's support page, data retrieved from Gmail, Drive, and Calendar is stored on Anthropic's servers, tied to the associated chat, and deleted when the user deletes that chat. Anthropic states it does not train its models on this connector data, except for Free, Pro, and Max users who have opted in to allow their chats to be used for model training and who copy or paste content from these connectors into a conversation.

Who should pay attention

The feature suits people who already rely on Claude alongside Google Workspace for writing documents, spreadsheets, or presentations, and want Claude to act directly on the real file instead of just returning text to paste manually. Because it remains in beta, the support page notes some actions may not work reliably yet.
